The short version
- Seven hotels in Osaka, Kobe, Himeji and Nara that we paid for ourselves between September 2025 and June 2026. Every price is the total from the booking confirmation, tax and service included.
- Range: ¥10,533 to ¥15,744 a night. Cheapest was three nights in Kobe with breakfast; priciest was Himeji with dinner and breakfast.
- Best value for a couple: Mitsui Garden Hotel Osaka Premier, ¥15,581 for two and a proper hotel rather than a business box.
- Best for a Nara day: Novotel Nara, ¥12,877 after a coupon (list ¥16,300), with a rooftop terrace.
- Not included: city accommodation tax where it applies (Osaka charges ¥200–500 per person per night depending on the rate, since September 2025), paid at the desk.
Kansai is where the “cheap Japan” idea still holds
Tokyo hotels have become expensive. Kansai (Osaka, Kobe, Nara and the castle town of Himeji) is still cheaper. On the same weekday, with the same booking habits, we have paid on average a few thousand yen less a night here than in Tokyo, and the rooms are often bigger.
This list is the Kansai version of our Tokyo hotels under ¥17,000: hotels we actually stayed in, with the exact amount we paid on the exact date. Four were my husband’s work trips (one adult, weekday); three were the two of us (two adults, sometimes a weekend). We say which is which, because the price depends on it.

Two of these were paid with a Rakuten Travel coupon: Via Inn Shin-Osaka listed at ¥15,520 and Novotel Nara at ¥16,300; the table shows what actually left the card. Himeji was booked at ¥18,520 on Rakuten before its coupon.
Osaka: three ways to do it
- Mitsui Garden Hotel Osaka Premier, ¥15,581 for two, Sunday night. Nakanoshima, the island between the rivers, walking distance to Yodoyabashi and the Kitahama cafés. Book this one if you want the room itself to be part of the trip: a large bath, a public bath on the top floor, and it is quiet. For two people on a Sunday it cost less than most of the Tokyo business singles on our list.
- Via Inn Shin-Osaka West, ¥13,968 for two, Friday. Right at Shin-Osaka, which only matters if you are arriving late by Shinkansen or leaving early. Clean, JR-run, no surprises. Not a place to spend the evening.
- HOTEL Shiki Utsubo Park, ¥12,600, one adult, Tuesday. A small hotel by Utsubo Park, west of Honmachi. Our cheapest Osaka night, and the neighbourhood (bakeries, wine bars, a rose garden) is a side of Osaka most people do not expect.
Kobe: the cheapest nights on this list
- Hotel Via Mare Kobe, ¥10,533 a night, three nights with breakfast. The cheapest night on this list: a Sannomiya business hotel with a breakfast buffet for about ¥4,000 less than the cheapest Tokyo single we paid for.
- HOTEL SUI Kobe Sannomiya, ¥14,339 a night for two, Friday and Saturday. This is the weekend, couple price, and it still came in under Tokyo’s weekday single. Sannomiya is the right base for Kobe: the harbour, Kitano’s old foreign houses, and the port-side old settlement (where we did our kimono photoshoot) are all on foot.
Himeji: dinner and breakfast for ¥15,744
- Himeji Castle Grandvrio Hotel, ¥15,744, one adult, Wednesday, dinner and breakfast included. If you are doing Himeji Castle as an overnight rather than a day trip from Osaka, half board makes sense on price: dinner and breakfast are included, and the castle is a short walk away. The breakfast room (“Forest Coast”) is in the photos.
Nara: a rooftop for the price of a business hotel
- Novotel Nara, ¥12,877, one adult, Thursday (list ¥16,300). The newest hotel on this list and the least like a business hotel: a lounge with a long table, a rooftop terrace, and rooms with a red-lacquer accent wall. Nara Park and the deer are a walk or a short bus ride away. If you see it near ¥13,000 with a coupon, book it.
Notes from a local
- Stay put. Our cheapest rate, ¥10,533 a night at Via Mare, was a three-night booking in one hotel. If you are basing yourself in Kansai for Kyoto day trips, book one hotel for the whole stay rather than hopping.
- Coupons are real money. Rakuten Travel coupons took ¥1,500–3,500 off three of these stays. The site is in Japanese, but the coupon button on the hotel page is easy to find. Agoda has its own version.
- Our cheapest couple night was a Sunday. Mitsui Garden Premier for two on a Sunday cost less than most weekday singles in Tokyo.
- Kyoto is not on this list on purpose. We have not paid for a Kyoto hotel in the last year. When we do, it goes here.
- We are not being paid to say any of this. We only write about hotels we stayed at, and the prices are what we paid.
FAQ
Which city should I sleep in for Kyoto day trips?
Osaka or Kobe. Kyoto is 15 minutes from Shin-Osaka by Shinkansen, or about 30 minutes by JR Special Rapid from Osaka and about 50 from Sannomiya.
Are these prices still valid?
No hotel price stays the same for long. These show the range these hotels were in between autumn 2025 and summer 2026. If you see a much higher number, it is probably a weekend, a holiday, or cherry-blossom season.
Do I pay tax on top?
Osaka charges an accommodation tax per person per night (since September 2025: ¥200 under ¥15,000, ¥400 under ¥20,000, ¥500 above that), collected by the hotel.
